Child's Play
Towards the end of the school year, I went to the local coffee shop to get drinks with some girlfriends. While we were waiting for our orders, I sat down next to the establishment owner's little girl. She had her Polly Pocket and Kellie dolls with their clothes scattered out on the counter and appeared to be preoccupied with what she was doing. So I asked her what was going on? She replied that Cinderella (one of her Polly Pockets) had stolen an orb from the pirates and now they were coming after it. So she hid it in a tall tall place that they couldn't reach with ladders or ropes. Then she went home to her mom who was taking care of Cindy's sick mermaid sister. When her mother told her to go upstairs and change for dinner, the real girl spent some time trying to change her doll, and we all know how hard it is to get dressed when your clothes are made of plastic. So I offered my plastic clothes dressing expertise and fixed her up real nice. The girl took her from me when I was done and proceeded to "stuff" (for you can't really stuff plastic) Cindy's shirt into her skirt so that "no one can see her underwear," because that's immodest. I concur.

Our world today
At college, it seems like I get stuck in a bubble comprised of my friends, my activities, my schoolwork, my problems. Then I come home. Suddenly the world and everything outside myself yet so important comes flooding in on me, almost suffocating me with it's intensity. And what am I supposed to do? I feel so helpless to do anything about it, so I write. I write about Israel and the possible looming holocaust. I write about Libya and the rebels there. I write about our economy and spending and flippant ideas and attitudes in our government and our White House. I try to be fair and see both sides of things, but the more I see the contrast between what's going on in the world and our president's actions and attitudes, I see that he does live in a fairy world. It's not a crime to be an idealist. It can be a very good thing. However, when you have in your mind an ideal but turn your eyes away from the real and the actual, you're hurting more than helping. Priorities need to be set up. Actions need to be taken.
Will we save our economy? Will we save Israel? Will we improve overseas relations? Will we lower spending and debt? Will we focus on one of a million issues facing our country and those around the world? Where other people's lives are concerned, you can't focus on just one. They all have to do with one another. I want to help other countries, but if we aren't financially stable in our economy and our debt then we won't be in much of a position to help anyone. However, when will we be stable? When it's too late? Too late to stop a massive killing of a race? Perhaps forming better relationships with other countries will allow us to spread the issues out amongst those who can learn to agree based on a newly built respect.
In the upcoming 2012 elections, I'll admit I expect a lot from whomever I vote for. But someone who can hold up in the face of all that needs to be done, all the challenges, can stand some high voter standards.
